Town of Piestany has got 32 000 inhabitants and is located in the south-western part of Slovakia; in the northern territory of Podunajska plain; 162 m above sea-level; close to the river Vah and protected recreational area of Slnava.

The town is surrounded by the Povazsky Inovec mountains on the eastern side and the Low Carpatians on the western side.

Piestany is one of the most popular and famous spa towns which attract the attention of many tourists and visitors. The whole region including the town have got an important historical background too. There is one of the oldest European archaeological settlement areas. The first written reference of Piestany dates from 1113, however the area has been inhabited by many different cultures before that time.

In times gone by many wild animals would head for the healing wells attracted by the special water. Their arrival in turn attracted many primeval hunters. The area was highly inhabited during the early Stone Age (25 000 years ago) and many tools, parts of ceramics and settlement bases were found here. The most famous find is the sculpture of a woman called Moravianska Venusa. It was carved from a mammoth bone by primeval man.

Celts came to this area during early Iron Age, followed by tribes of Quads who had to fight for their land near the river Danube which were inhabited by Roman tribes. Slovan tribes begin to settle down in this area in 5th and 6th century. Their main interest was farming and agriculture. Plenty of archaeological finds dating from 7th – 9th century were preserved and found in this part of the country.

The farming village of Piestany was established around 1000 A.D. when King Stefan I announced the creation of the Hungarian Empire. As previously mentioned, the earliest written references date from 1113 and can be found in the letter written by King Koloman I.

In the early 13th century, the village was managed from the Kings castle at Bana. In the long history of Piestany, there are records showing that there were a number of powerful owners of the village. The first owners were the families, Hunts and Poznan; these were followed by Matus Cak Trenciansky; Earls of Uljak; the Thurza family from Hlohovec and finally the Berceni and Forgac families who owned Piestany in 17th century.

In 1720, the village fell into the hands of the Earls of Endody from Hlohovec and their family members and heirs owned Piestany until 1940.

Earl Erdody changed Piestany significantly in the early 19th century. In 1889, the spa village was rented to the company of Mr Alexander Winter and his sons for 99 years. They all gradually renovated the accommodation and spa facilities; built spa court; summer theatre; hotel Thermia Palace; spa Irma and the thermal swimming pool Eva. The Winter family made Piestany famous on a world wide basis and it became an important spa as well as cultural and sporting town.

In August 1945, the village of Piestany became a town and was awarded the town symbol which is used to this day of a man breaking the crutch he no longer needs. Further development proceeded during the times of communism, new housing estates went up and schools were built together with the Cultural House and big healing complex known as Balnea. This major spa building, built in the late seventies and early eighties, is situated on Spa Island where majority of spa houses and healing halls are now located. In 1989, the centre of town was renovated and pedestrian walking zones were modernised to enhance the visitors experience of the area.

Nowadays, Piestany offers plenty of cultural, recreational and social events and the town is still considered to be one of the most popular spas for local people as well as visitors from around the world.
