Brdárka

Actual position Village Brdárka
Attraction highlighting:  Evangelical Church, aragonite cave

The village of Brdárka is one of many villages situated in the mountain range known as Slovenské rudohorie, part of Stolické vrchy. The village is located at the foot of the local hill know as Radzim (it is 991 metres above sea level). This sleepy Slovak village is surrounded by several smaller hills, vast meadows, dense woods full of herbs and forest fruits and a few fruit tree orchards. There are numerous high quality spring wells in this area and the water from them is used for drinking purposes.
Several dozens of family houses are dotted around the village and some of them date from the early 20th century. Some families run their small family business and are happy to rent a room or two to visitors and tourists. There are also several good local spots for camping.
One of the most dominant buildings in the village is the local Evangelical Church with an interesting tower which was built in 1696 on the ruins of an old wooden chapel. The main feature of the church is an old organ of great historical value which was made by Master Wallachy.
The most popular tourist attraction near Brdárka is an aragonite cave (known as Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa). Several traditional events take place regularly in the village of Brdárka. These include the International Youth Gathering in August each year known as the Summer with Brdárka (Leto s Brdárkou) which lasts for two weeks. The participants have got a chance to learn several common rural crafts including carving, lace making and whicker work. Those who enjoy dancing can learn basic methods of traditional Slovak folk dancing and for those who like do - it - yourself jobs there is a opportunity of improving their basic building skills and help in the maintenance of some community areas and houses in the village. The fortnight in Brdárka also offers a folk evening full of traditional Slovak dancing and singing.
