The municipality of Nizna is located at the base of the Ostravica hill and is situated on both sides of the Orava river. On the top of the Ostravice hill, 767 metres above sea level lies the discovered ruins of Halstats castle.
The remains of Frantiseks iron-ore smeltering factory have also been discovered in the area on Nizna.

With a population of over 4000 citizens, together with the borough of Zemianska Dedina, Nizna belongs to the largest insdustrial municipalities in the Orava region.
The first written reference about Nizna, occurred in the year of 1395, and states that the previous name of the municipality was called "Nissna Wes Tvrdosina". Due to Nizna's convenient location, visitors can enjoy a more diversified holiday time by travelling 15-20 kilometres from the tourist center to other attractions such as Rohace, Oravice, The Oravska priehrada (Oravska dam) and The Oravsky Podzamok (Oravsky castle).

In addition to having the characteristics of an agricultural and industrial town, Nizna also possesses the true qualities of a cultural and recreational area with plenty of shopping stores and sporting activities. Visitors can even find comfortable accommodations available with indoor-swimming pool, tennis courts and fitness-center with access to ski lifts.

RECREATION:
The surroundings of Nizna offer plenty of hiking trails suitable for easy walking and cross-country skiing (when possible). The most popular trail leeds from the bus station in Prasatin with alternative routes through the Skorusina-Oravice or Rohace areas. As part of the outdoors program, the agricultural center of Nizna offers visitors horseback riding as well as fishing in the natural parks at Studeny potok (Cold brook).
